Day 14 - Fri, Jun 20, 2025

Today we all ditched work and went to an indigenous village in the Amazon. 

This was the place they were originally going to send me, and I'd be doing a homestay.  Thank the Lord that they changed their mind and sent me to Codo.  I think they've only had electricity for a year, and I'm not really sure they have running water yet.

There was no real drama; the kids did a little customary dance in their native costumes, and they made us a meal and some fruit juice.  They were really just dirt poor more than anything, they didn't have a pot to pee in much less a window to throw it out of. I'm pretty sure the head guy didn't know we spoke Spanish, because he gave this hellfire speech that if they were ever going to pull themselves out of poverty they needed to focus on tourism ... And that we all had a pocketful of money, and it was there responsibility to not let us leave with it 😳

At some point, we went to a part of the Amazon River that everyone went swimming in except me and the other med guy.  A. There's piranna, and B. We have seen some things we can't unsee.  No way you're getting me into that petri dish full of plague soup.

Day 1 - Sat, June 7, 2025

 I left Denver yesterday at 2p, and first stop was Mexico City.  I had an 8 hour layover, which actually went by pretty quick since I had to go through Mexican customs, leave the airport, and then come back in.  Don't ask me why.  And Mexico has a new tax of $50 on foreigners just to step foot in their airport, don't ask me why ... Though I can probably guess.  Then off to Lima for a quick 6 hour flight.  I really, really wanted to sleep on this flight, cause it was about my only chance to sleep, so I took a "sleeping aid" about a half hour before the flight.  Nothing.  So I took another.  Then another.  I stopped at 4 but never did sleep, though I was feeling pretty good at that point. There was another 8 hour layover in Lima, which also wasn't so bad because they have a really nice airport.  It reminded me more of a shopping mall in the old days ... Day 17 - Mon, Jun 23, 2025

Today there wasn't a ton of excitement, except ... It was just me and one nurse in the ER today, and at some point she said "I'll be back in a while."  So literally for like an hour and a half I was in the ER by myself. Which isn't a huge deal because there's only four beds, but it's kind of a huge deal when I'm mixing meds and putting in IV's when I'm not really familiar with their medications or wtf I'm doing, if I want to get specific.  At one point all four beds were full, and I was running back and forth  and acting all doctor like.  But at least I didn't kill anyone... Yet. The funny thing is my local friend told me last night that everyone in town knows who I am, the gringo doctor.  And when they come to the clinic they try to get me. 😳. I think for the most part it's only because I have some empathy and spend some time with them, and the other doctors seriously just kind of yell at them.  "I told you to take antibiotic...

Day 7 - Fri, Jun 13, 2025

Every day you finish and go wtf, it couldn't possibly get any crazier.  But then it does.  So today, Brendan, the other guy in the medical program who is a first year student, wanted to do triage so they put me back in the ED. When I got there, it was me and one other doctor, and two nurses.  They told me there was a woman in labor in the operating room/l&d room/lunch room, so I went down to watch (hoping I could tap in). Well shit howdy, I'm not even sure I can put the visual image into words... First, maybe one or two of the nurses had gloves on. I don't think anyone, including the doctor, had a mask on.  There was no monitor on the mom, or the baby, no actual equipment in the room, and for all intents and purposes she might as well been having this kid in a field.  When she had a contraction, a nurse would get on a step stool and literally push down from the top with all her weight, almost like CPR.  The doctor was trying to dilate her with his index...
